The story
John Calvin
John Calvin was a French Protestant reformer who lived from 1509 to 1564. His work in Geneva helped shape the Reformed tradition. His biblical commentaries and his Institutes of the Christian Religion emphasized the authority of Scripture. His influence spread through preaching, teaching, and books that reached far beyond Geneva.
The Geneva Bible
First published in 1560, the Geneva Bible was an English translation produced by Protestant exiles seeking refuge from religious persecution. Its explanatory notes helped individuals and families study Scripture for themselves. It became an influential household Bible among English-speaking Protestants.
The translation emerged from the Reformed community closely associated with Calvin. His teaching and biblical scholarship influenced its development. This shirt pairs his portrait with words from that tradition, without presenting the quotation as Calvin's personal statement.
"Play the valiant men"
The phrase comes from the Geneva Bible's explanatory note on Nehemiah 4:14, not from the verse itself. It calls the reader to act courageously. The note connects that courage with confidence in God's deliverance and the defense of others.
In the chapter, Jerusalem's builders face threats of attack while repairing the city's walls. Nehemiah tells them to remember the Lord and fight for their brothers, sons, daughters, wives, and homes. They pray, stand watch, and continue the work. Their courage serves a purpose beyond themselves.
This design honors courage rooted in faith, strength used responsibly, and the resolve to keep working when the task becomes difficult.
