The story
Hugh Latimer had served as Bishop of Worcester. Nicholas Ridley had served as Bishop of London. Both men were tried for heresy under the reign of Mary I, condemned for their convictions about Scripture and the Lord's Supper.
On October 16, 1555, they were brought to the stake together in Oxford. Foxe's Book of Martyrs records that Ridley embraced Latimer when they arrived and that the two men prayed together before they were bound for the fire.
As the flames were lit, Latimer is reported to have told Ridley to be of good comfort and play the man. He said they would that day light a candle that would, by God's grace, never be put out.
Play the man was a call to courage. One man facing death offered it to another man facing the same sentence. The candle he spoke of was the hope that their witness would outlast them and that the gospel they preached would keep being heard.
This design remembers that. Stand firm. Encourage your brother. Remain faithful.
