The story
Jan Hus signed his letters "the Goose," which is what his name means in Czech. In October 1412, with an excommunication hanging over him and Prague under interdict, he wrote to the city that the Goose was a slow domestic bird and had broken through the nets anyway, and that stronger birds would follow.
Three years later, on July 6, 1415, the Council of Constance burned him on a meadow outside the town. A friend who stood in the crowd wrote down what he sang.
The swan on the shirt is the legend that grew up after his death. The rest of the scene is the record. Read the full story.
